CT Scan and Angiotomography

What is a CT Scan and how does it relate to Angiotomography?

A CT Scan (Computed Tomography Scan) is an advanced medical imaging test that uses X-ray technology and computers to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. When this technique is combined with the use of a contrast dye to visualize blood vessels, it becomes an angiotomography. This specialized test allows healthcare providers to examine blood flow and detect abnormalities in blood vessels and surrounding tissues.

The contrast dye, called contrast material, is injected through an IV line placed in your arm or hand. It “lights up” blood vessels and tissues, providing enhanced clarity for diagnostic purposes. Angiotomography is a specific type of CT Scan, designed to focus on the circulatory system, making it indispensable in detecting vascular-related conditions.

Why Might You Need a CT Scan or Angiotomography?

Your doctor may recommend a CT Scan or angiotomography for a variety of reasons, particularly when examining blood vessels. Some common uses include:

  • Identifying aneurysms (enlarged blood vessels at risk of rupturing).
  • Detecting atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits narrow the arteries.
  • Locating abnormal blood vessel formations in the brain.
  • Evaluating blood vessel damage caused by trauma.
  • Diagnosing blood clots that may have traveled to the lungs.
  • Assessing tumors that rely on blood vessels for growth.

Angiotomography is particularly valuable in planning treatments, preventing strokes or heart attacks, and supporting surgical preparation for organ transplants.

How to Prepare for a CT Scan or Angiotomography?

Precautions: If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before scheduling this test. Alternative imaging methods may be discussed.

Clothing: Remove all jewelry or piercings and change into a hospital-provided gown if necessary.

Contrast Media: If the test involves contrast dye, fasting for six hours prior is required. Patients with kidney issues or prior allergic reactions to contrast dye should inform their healthcare provider.

Special Instructions for Diabetics: Light meals and possible medication adjustments may be needed. Follow specific advice provided by your doctor.

What Happens During Angiotomography?

The test is typically performed in a hospital or outpatient imaging center. After positioning you on the exam table, a radiology technician administers the contrast dye. During the scan, you may hear clicking or buzzing sounds from the machine and be asked to hold your breath for short periods. The procedure usually lasts 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
